The first time you visit a naturopathic physician, you will be asked about your health history, including your diet, stress level, and use of tobacco and alcohol. You’ll also discuss why you have scheduled this appointment. The doctor may also conduct an examination and order diagnostic tests. He or she will then work with you to develop a customized health-management plan, and he or she may refer you to other specialists as needed.
A new patient intake with an ND/NMD will generally last two hours, and follow-up visits range from 30 to 90 minutes. Expect to spend enough time to ask and answer questions and understand your health goals. Much like a visit to an MD, your time with your naturopathic physician will focus on getting you better. The difference is that an ND/NMD looks at you as a whole person and, instead of waiting for disease to emerge, will work to head it off before it happens.
