Hyperbaric therapy, also known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), is a specialized therapy that uses an increase in atmospheric pressure to allow the body to incorporate more oxygen into blood cells, blood plasma, cerebral-spinal fluid, and other body fluids. HBOT is a medical treatment administered by delivering normal air or up to 100% oxygen at pressures greater than atmospheric pressure to a patient in an enclosed chamber. This pure form of oxygen acts like a drug to the body, eliciting varying levels of response at different pressures, durations, and dosages.
In the hyperbaric chamber, as the pressure increases, more oxygen from the air is pushed into the fluids and the tissues of the body, allowing the body to heal itself. The oxygen can activate DNA in injured or dormant cells and stress bad pathogenic infections by producing the enzyme peroxidase, which protects the body’s cells.
At Lifestream Wellness, treatments typically last 60–90 minutes and may be given daily. Paul Harch, MD, a pioneer in oxygen treatment, said that it takes 24 treatments to establish new blood vessels and up to 40 treatments to make those vessels permanent. With ongoing treatments, patients often see additional improvements.
